email to sms is a service that is widely available and allows you to send text messages in the form of emails. The way it works is by transmitting the SMS as an email with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP, not to be confused with SMPP).

All email client software such as Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail and any applications that can send emails using SMTP can use RoutoMessaging’s email to sms service.

Sending SMS by email is as simple as just entering one or more mobile numbers in the TO field of your email. With our global coverage your can send SMS to any network operator that the people you want to send the SMS to are using.
Here are a few examples of the many ways email to sms is currently used:
This could be a mobile number (to solicit a reply back – see below) or name (letters or letters and numbers combined) and is placed in the Subject line of the email.
This is a feature commonly referred to as alphanumeric dynamic sender ID (or dynamically specifiable originator address) for which we provide dynamic sender ID guidelines of its variations and limitations.
If you rent a Virtual Mobile Number (VMN) and set it as the sender ID (see above), you can receive SMS replies back into your SMS Inbox in our Web based Command Centre customer portal. There is no incoming charge for SMS replies you receive, which means 2 way SMS campaigns such as SMS promotions or SMS customer satisfaction surveys are cost effective.
Our email to sms service supports multilingual keyboards, which means you can write your SMS in Arabic, Hebrew, Russian (Cyrillic) characters and all other languages of the world. Once received by our SMS Gateway through the email to sms interface, SMS is automatically formatted as plain text SMS or Unicode SMS according to the language in the main body of your email, therefore ensuring the SMS can be properly displayed and read.
If you are writing an email for plain text SMS, you can use up to 765 plain text characters, which works out at nearly 5 times longer than the maximum of a single plain text SMS (160 characters).
If you would like to send an email for SMS in any other language where we need to format the SMS as Unicode (for example, Chinese SMS and SMS in Arabic) then the maximum character limit in your email is 335 characters, which is just over 5 times the maximum of a single Unicode SMS (70 characters).
Delivery status reports of the texts you sent are captured as and when the mobiles you are texting receive your text.
These SMS delivery reports (sometimes abbreviated as “dlrs”) are visible at anytime in our Command Centre customer Web portal and help to track the success of your SMS campaigns.
There are no set up or recurring fees and no commitments with RoutoMessaging’s email to sms service. Instead, you are only charged for each SMS you send according to the competitive Price Planyou have selected.

How secure is RoutoMessaging's email2sms?
Unlike other email to text services that identify you by the From field of your address and are consequently exposed to the risk of spoofing your email address, our email to sms works differently and is more secure (see How it Works below).
Supports SMTPS, which uses SSL or TLS encryption to protect sensitive SMS content (in your emails) in transit to our SMTP interface.
How does RoutoMessaging email2sms work?
Our email to sms service works by providing your applications with an SMTP interface to TextGate, our SMS Gateway. Any applications (including all email clients) that are capable of sending or can be set up to send emails using SMTP can benefit from our email to sms service. All you need to do is configure the SMTP settings in your email client or other type of application.
Then, to send an SMS, you send an email just like any other ordinary email and it is directed through our SMTP interface (by way of configuring the SMTP settings) for our TextGate. The SMS is then routed through our worldwide direct SS7 operator connections to the correct destination operator. If that person you are sending SMS to has ported their number between operators, we will know that using Number Discovery and route the SMS correctly.
The SMTP interface is particularly useful for SMS enabling any software that cannot send bulk SMS using our SMPP or HTTP APIs but are capable of sending emails using SMTP. You could consider the SMTP interface as an SMTP Application Programming Interface (API) but without the need for any programming, only configuring settings.
