What is ENUM?

ENUM is a mobile number query service that enables carriers transmitting Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) calls or SMS to protect revenue margins and keep customers happy with service quality.

ENUM does this by enabling the carrier to identify the actual network operator to which the destination mobile number belongs. As a result, this ensures calls and SMS are:

  • Routed in compliance with Least Cost Routing (LCR)
  • Billed accurately to your customers - no undercharging
  • Terminated successfully - no voice or messaging traffic left pending

Our ENUM service has its name because it uses ENUM technology as the interface to query mobile numbers. An ENUM query converts a telephone number (E.164 ITU standard) into an Internet DNS (Domain Name Service) request.

For carriers that require additional data including whether a mobile number is valid and roaming information, please see our Number Discovery HLR service.

Why do I need ENUM?

It is a fact that Mobile Number Portability (MNP), is here to stay and is already available to over 2 million mobile subscribers. ENUM is a real-time routing intelligence tool that addresses the interconnect challenges caused by MNP whereby mobile subscribers can port their existing number between networks. In 2011, India, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority India (TRAI) announced the introduction of MNP which has triggered major implications for carriers.

Put simply, ENUM locks in your margin or stops it turning into cost by making the wrong routing decisions due to absence of number portability data.

Carriers, service providers and wholesalers in VOIP and SMS markets often acquire number portability information from multiple sources that trigger headaches in managing these ongoing. One potential source is to acquire an entire port corrected database and the IT resource required to operate it - all at very substantial upfront cost.

By contrast, ENUM provides a single DNS-based interface that allow you to access port-corrected information quickly and reliability on a pay as you query basis.

How does ENUM work?

Your VOIP application, SMSC or gateway submits a query through our ENUM interface to identify the actual destination network operator for the mobile number queried.

How ENUM service works-diagram;

The ENUM interface relays the query to our Mobile Messaging Network, which then utilises its direct SS7 links withs operators worldwide to obtain port corrected data:

  • MCC (Mobile Country Code)
  • MNC (Mobile Network Code)

What is the cost to use ENUM?

With ENUM, you only pay for the information you query. Each query costs 0.01 Euros per mobile number queried regardless of which operator it belongs to in the world.
